Metcalf Avenue of Flags: Where Do They Come From?

Six times per year over 350 American flags are raised in Overland Park along Metcalf Avenue. It is an inspirational sight that stirs feelings of patriotism and pride, but do you know where the flags come from? Known as the Metcalf Avenue of Flags, this initiative has been led by the Overland Park Host Lions Club since 1965.

Recently, I was invited to speak at a meeting of the Overland Park Host Lions Club. During my presentation, I discussed the significance of community service organizations, the macro trend of declining membership, and strategies for overcoming this challenge. We had a wonderful interactive conversation about the importance of these organizations for both individuals and the community. Members shared their reasons for joining, including the sense of fulfillment from serving others and the relationships formed.

Personally, I have always been a bit of a “joiner.” Growing up in a small town, I saw service organizations taking responsibility for much of what made our community strong. My first youth basketball tournament, flag football league, and spelling bee were sponsored by such organizations. They hosted my favorite community gatherings and supported the most vulnerable. I often tell myself, “If you are asked to serve, and you can, you should,” which is likely a result of the sense of duty I formed watching these groups in my youth. However, I also believe I have gained more than I have given through a sense of fulfillment, personal growth, new relationships, and more.

Overland Park has numerous service organizations actively seeking support and members. If you are not currently involved in an organization, consider joining one! If you need guidance on where to start, feel free to contact me at josh@joshbeck.com. Based on my experience, it is well worth it!
